Some background: I have been using 11.5 for a year now, but this is my first attempt at a full restore.

My Dell Precision 670 (Windows XP/R3) died a motherboard death and I am trying to restore a full backup onto a Dell Optiplex 780. I have successfully used a Linux Acronis boot CD to boot the 780 and access the full backup located on an external USB drive. However the Universal Restore option immediately resulted in an error (sorry, can't specify the error - that was 48 hours ago). But that's water under the bridge b/c I was able to use the Recover option to recover the full backup onto the 780 and I have verified that the files are in good shape. And through a variety of trials and tribulations (and the EaseUS Partition Master Utility) I was able to get the MBR and boot.ini configured properly. However now the machine will start the windows boot process, but when it goes to start windows (progress bar about 90% complete), the system reboots. This cycle continues ad infinitum. I suspect (from reading elsewhere and the fact that the Dell Optiplex 780 is a more recent box than the Dell Precision 670) that the problem is that I don't have the correct drivers for the hard drive controller. I tried to bypass this problem temporarily by setting the drive controller access mode in the BIOS to 'legacy' mode (instead of ATA or AHCI), but I get the same behavior.

Assuming that I am right about the driver, my question is this: once I get the proper driver in the proper format, how do I use my Acronis Linux boot CD to install the driver, given that I have already done a full restore (which I don't wish to repeat) ? I would also welcome any other wisdom anyone can contribute from their own experience with similar hardware/software.

Thx in advance!
Eric

There is 'apply Universal restore' button on the start page of bootable media. It applies drivers to the already restored system like in your case.

Yes, apply Universal Restore was the very first thing I tried -- three days ago. I just tried it again, with the same result: Within a second of clicking OK on the 'Apply Universal Restore Page', 'Loading' flashes, then I get a Universal Restore Task window (jpg attached), saying:
Message: the feature is not available
Additional Info:
Error code: 1
Line info: (a very large hex #)
Fields: $module: disk_bundle_glx_pic_37613
Message: The feature is not available

This message doesn't tell me much, and it doesn't make me feel very good, either. Next steps?

Just to repeat where I am at: I was able to restore my files from the vault 2 days ago; it's just that Windows XP just won't finish booting (see my initial message).

I did download a driver for my machine from the Dell website (Dell Optiplex 780): Intel Matrix Storage Manager, but when I attempted to unzip the files on an identical machine and put them on a USB stick, the Intel setup.exe complained: 'This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software'. Doubly frustrating, ridiculous, etc..

'The feature is not available' error occurs you don't have a license for Universal Restore. It's included in all licenses starting from build 38774 (i.e. newer build with existing license enables UR), so you can either download new .iso file for bootable media from you account, or update the product to the latest build (where Media Builder is installed) and create it yourself. However if you don't have .sys drivers extracted from .exe installer, Universal Restore still won't help.

Hello Fedor,

Your reply explains what was happening, and it also serves as a terrific example of Acronis' awful, user unfriendly, error messages. Because of the error message, I was lead to believe that there was something wrong with what I was doing, either my backup set, machine configuration or whatever. There is nothing that I found in Acronis documentation that tells you that the universal restore might not be available on the bootable CD. When I created the bootable media in the first place, a year ago, I thought I had everything I needed to do a universal restore. I guess I should really have taken the time to do a test restore before the gun was to my head.

I did end up doing exactly as you suggested, namely creating a new bootable CD from the online ISO image. Then I was able to do the universal restore, which got me up running (well, more like limping) on the new box.

To tally up the human cost of this 'feature not available' message: Because I couldn't do the universal restore, I had to manually bring up a box, reinstall software, etc. Took me about 8 hours over the course of 2-3 days. And now I have to merge the manually restored box with the universally restored box.... Learning is painful. Yes, I should be more familiar with a product which I rely on when machines die. Do I have the time to do that? I suppose it's another case of 'Pay a little now or pay a lot more later....'

As far as I know, in later builds this error message was changed to mention license issue explicitly and another message with missing feature description is logged too.

Hello Eric Podietz,
A couple of words about documentation. A year ago (when you created the bootable CD), the documentation clearly stated when Universal Restore was available and when not: http://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/ABR11.5/index.html#1…. This explanation can also be found in the product built-in Help (unless you have upgraded to the new version).
When building the media, you could pay attention to a UI text saying that UR will not available on the CD.

Thank you for your detailed reply. I hope for the sake of others that I am the only user to experience what I went through.

I wish part of my job description was 'become an expert in Acronis', so that I had sufficient time to dedicate to it. Unfortunately, the Acronis dealer installed it and did not really advise me well on when Universal Restore would be available..

I had also purchased the server edition for Windows Server 8.

  • Acronis True Image 2014

Description

To be able to download Acronis Universal Restore tool, you need to register your license of Acronis True Image 2014 Premium under your account on Acronis website.

To use Acronis Universal Restore on a machine with dissimilar hardware, you need to:

  1. Download Acronis Universal Restore ISO image;
  2. Burn the ISO image to a CD/DVD (see Burning an ISO Image) or make a bootable flash drive (see Starting Acronis product from USB flash drive);
  3. Boot the machine with dissimilar hardware from Acronis Bootable Media and apply Acronis Universal Restore.

Applying Acronis Universal Restore

Acronis Universal Restore is a module that allows changing Windows Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL.dll) and install mass storage boot device drivers into the system.

It installs boot device drivers (e.g. hard drive or RAID controller drivers) into the system during the recovery process, so that the operating system can boot from this boot device. If there are proper NIC drivers present in the folder with the drivers, Acronis Universal Restore will copy them into the restored system and will schedule their installation on Windows boot-up.

(!) Do not use WindowsSystem32drivers folder as drivers source.

(!) All the other drivers (e.g. video and sound card drivers, plug and play drivers) are not installed by Acronis Universal Restore, as they can be installed in Windows after the successful migration.

Prepare drivers

Before applying Universal Restore to a Windows operating system, make sure that you have the drivers for the new HDD controller and the chipset. These drivers are critical to start the operating system. Use the CD or DVD supplied by the hardware vendor or download the drivers from the vendor's Web site. The driver files should have the *.inf, *.sys or *.oem extensions. If you download the drivers in the *.exe, *.cab or *.zip format, extract them using a third-party application (e.g. free 7-zip toolor any other).

The best practice is to store drivers for all the hardware used in your organization in a single repository sorted by device type or by the hardware configurations. You can keep a copy of the repository on a DVD or a flash drive; pick some drivers and add them to the bootable media; create the custom bootable media with the necessary drivers (and the necessary network configuration) for each of your servers. Or, you can simply specify the path to the repository every time Universal Restore is used.

Check access to the drivers in bootable environment

Make sure you have access to the device with drivers when working under bootable media. Even if you configure system disk recovery in a Windows environment, the machine will reboot and recovery will proceed in the Linux-based environment. Use WinPE-based media if the device is available in Windows but Linux-based media does not detect it.

What if you do not have drivers

Windows 7 includes more drivers than the older Windows operating systems. There is a great chance that Universal Restore finds all necessary drivers in the Windows 7 driver folder. So, you may not necessarily have to specify the external path to the drivers. Nevertheless, performing Universal Restore is critical so the system uses the correct drivers.
